Which Journey is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Dodge Journey. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Journey that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Stalling and power loss

    33,000–33,120 miles

  • Rearview camera image failure

    36,000–43,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Dodge Journey, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical16No crashes

The rearview camera image flips upside down, turns black, goes fuzzy or static, and often stays that way. Dealers tell some owners the camera has to be replaced, not repaired, and replacements sometimes fail again within a month. Other reports describe radio volume changing on its own, Bluetooth and hands-free calling dropping out, climate controls switching back on, screens dimming when the wipers run, and door locks that stop responding. In one report, a noise and an Electronic Throttle Control warning at low speed came before a fire under the front of the car that totaled it.

  • Backup camera7No crashes

Camera images that flip upside down, roll, distort, or go blank, with no warning light, are behind these reports. Most are about waiting for a recall repair. Owners received the notice, but dealers and the manufacturer say parts are unavailable or backordered, so cars stay unrepaired. Reported mileages cluster between about 36,000 and 43,000, with one at 110,000. Some owners bought their own replacement cameras instead of waiting.

  • Engine4No crashes

Overheating and sudden power loss lead these reports. The thermostat and housing fail with no warning and cause severe overheating, and in one case the replacement thermostat failed again. In another report, the engine overheated with no antifreeze and the dealer said it needed replacing at about 57,800 miles. Thermostat failure also shows up at 57,000. In a separate pattern, the car loses power on the highway around 33,000 miles, shows an electronic throttle warning, struggles to restart, and revs high afterward. Each of these can leave a car stalled in traffic.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Moisture builds up inside the headlights and dims night visibility, and it shows up in the other headlight after the first one is fixed. One report puts onset at 23,000 miles. In a separate pattern, a passenger-side headlight keeps failing despite new bulbs. Mechanics traced it to the socket or wiring harness, and it caused failed vehicle inspections. No warning light flags either problem. Owners pay for the repairs themselves, and one moisture fix cost $189.

  • Steering3No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning, which makes turning suddenly hard and staying in the lane difficult. One failure came at 35k miles on a car bought new. Dealers recommend replacing the rack and pinion, but owners say parts are under engineering review or on backorder, and one car sat unrepaired for 3 months. A separate report describes the front end bouncing and shaking, with loud squealing from the steering rack when turning, at only 100 miles.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The engine stalls suddenly at speed, sometimes with steam and fluid everywhere, leaving drivers stranded in traffic. These reports link the stalls to overheating, including a heater hose that leaks antifreeze and then bursts. No low-coolant warning appears before the engine is damaged. In another failure at 40k miles, the engine revs but the car will not move in drive or reverse. The dealer blamed a malfunctioning ABS module it said was discontinued. Stalls and overheating on busy roads are the main safety risk here.

  • Airbags21 crash

A lower airbag in front of the pedals deploys during hard braking toward stopped traffic. It pushes the driver's foot off the brake, cuts the ankle, and causes a rear-end crash with one injury. The driver also noticed more brake pedal travel than usual just before it happened. The only other report describes the passenger seat belt popping out from the wall of the car. Both involve occupant protection parts failing in ways that can directly injure someone.

  • Brakes2No crashes

ABS faults leave cars undrivable and unrepairable. Reports describe ABS, traction control, check engine, park assist, and tire pressure lights coming on together and cruise control quitting. In one case, the brake pedal locks and the car will not restart. Dealers find a bad ABS module and HCU, then say the module is no longer made and cannot be found aftermarket. Parts listed as under engineering review mean months of waiting with no fix.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Journey owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I purchased my 2020 Dodge Journey brand new. About 2 years ago the back up camera view flipped upside down. I took it to the dealership where I was told it wasn’t covered on a warranty and it would be close to $800 to replace. They said it has to be replaced and cannot just be fixed. After doing a lot of research online about this it seems like a very, very common problem. This should absolutely be a recall.

Electrical
My backup camera has a black screen when it was working it was poor quality even if it was clean, the sensors for backing up have failed! Warning message comes on on the dash but the fuses and all have been checked big safety issue living where there many children have to park on side of road because can see backing up

Backup camera
Approximately two weeks ago, my back up camera, which is located on my rearview mirror started flickering off and on and then it flips upside down and I’ve done some research on the Internet and it says that a lot of people has had this issue with the Dodge journey in the back up camera so I find this to be a safety issue and I believe this is something that Dodge should be fixing for their consumers

Engine
The thermostat and housing failed at 57,000 miles, less than 5 years of owning the vehicle. Not available for inspection as it is being replaced as I'm typing this. The problem was reproduced by the shop who is repairing the thermostat. There were no warnings or messages, the car started overheating severely one day and I brought it to the shop. This all started 3 days ago.

Exterior lights
Passenger side headlight which is a sealed headlight has moisture creating dimmed visibility a night -how does a sealed headlight get moisture in it unless it’s defective - the car only had 23,000 miles when problem started

Exterior lights
We fixed the driver-side headlight has moisture inside for $189 on 08/01/23. Now, the passenger-side headlight has moisture again. We think that the headlights must be defective headlight. Would you please check that?

Recall repairs are free at any Dodge dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Ram ProMaster and 2019-2020 Dodge Journey vehicles. Cracks in the microprocessor may cause the vehicle's rearview camera image not to display properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.

Risk: A rearview image that does not display properly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed beginning September 30, 2025. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated July 2026. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 59C.
