Worth adding to your 2024 checks

  • Take a long test drive and confirm the speedometer, turn signal indicators and infotainment screen keep updating.
  • Check that the truck powers off normally after the test drive.
  • Look on the dash for a "Service High Voltage System" message and scan for stored battery conditioning codes.

Which Silverado EV is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD450 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 450 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

Rear door sensors fail to detect open doors, mostly on the WT trim. The dash shows no door-ajar warning for the rear doors, the dome light stays off, and the truck can be put in drive with a rear door open. Walk-away locking can lock the truck with the key fob inside or an occupant in the back seat. One dealer traced the fault to a missing ground wire, while other dealers decline to fix it. Separate reports describe a backup camera that stops working and sudden limp mode at highway speed after driving through water.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Tonneau covers come loose, and in one case a cover lifted and flapped at interstate speed while a metal crossbar flew off the truck. Another cover separated from its tension bar and could not be reattached. The front trunk latch also fails repeatedly. When it does, the truck thinks the frunk is open and allows only limp mode. Resetting the 12-volt battery clears the fault, but replacement latches fail the same way again.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

The passenger-side door mirror uses flat glass instead of convex glass, and that leaves large blind spots on a truck this wide and tall. All three complaints describe the same limit. No adjustment shows both a small car alongside the truck and traffic coming up from the right rear. Owners flag the risk during quick lane changes on the highway and while parking, and they suggest convex replacement glass as the fix.

  • Transmission21 crash

Unintended acceleration appears in one crash report. The truck hesitated before accelerating from idle, then kept accelerating at about 55 mph after the driver released the pedal. It left the road and rolled over, and the driver was injured. This is a single report with unknown mileage, so it does not show a wider pattern. The only other complaint in this category gives no details in its text.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Silverado EV owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The backup camera stopped working around July 1. I took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer could not fix the problem. The dealer says GM is aware that some vehicles have their backup camera stop working and is working on a software fix. Backup cameras have been a required safety item on all cars sold in the US since 2018. An inoperable camera thus is a safety risk. There are no warning lights or other messages.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Electrical
Vehicle fails to determine if either passenger or driver rear doors are open. The vehicle is missing some functionality where the door can be opened and vehicle can be driven. My child can open the door and there will be no warning about the door being open. The interior lights do not come on when any of rear doors are open.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Body and structure
The front trunk latch mechanism repeatedly fails. When this occurs, the vehicle believes the trunk is open and will not let you drive in normal mode. It forces you to proceed in limp mode which is dangerous. The 12v battery has to be reset to have the sensor redetect the close latch. Reports from multiple forum sources show this to be a widespread problem and currently dealer are replacing with the same mechanism and the problems reoccur.

Where the 2024 fits in the Silverado EV's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2024 is the first model year of the Silverado EV's first generation (2024 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
