Which Impala is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Impala. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 25 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cylGas | FWD | 22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cylFlex fuel | FWD | 22 mpg |
- The 2018 Chevrolet Impala was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Impala that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Transmission slipping and failure
65,000–98,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Impala, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission11No crashes
Transmissions slip, shudder, skip gears and shift hard, most often around the lower gears. Some cars buck in stop-and-go traffic, get stuck in gear, or will not accelerate at speed. That creates a real risk of being hit from behind on the highway. Warning lights often come on only after the failure, or not at all. Dealers often decide the whole transmission needs replacing, and bills run into the thousands. One owner reports hard shifts returning after the replacement. Failures cluster between about 65,000 and 98,000 miles.
Electrical8No crashes
Power cuts out without warning. In some reports the interior and exterior lights go dark while driving. Other cars only click when you try to start them, or the driver information display goes blank. After a long drive, auto stop can shut the whole car off at a light, and it needs a full restart. One owner was told the battery fuse block was to blame. Battery replacements do not always fix it. Other reports describe tire pressure sensors that stop reporting and a corroded side detection sensor. Drivers who hit the start button at highway speed lose the engine and lights at once.
Steering7No crashes
Power steering assist cuts out suddenly. The wheel goes stiff and the car is hard to keep in its lane. Some drivers see a "Power Steering, Drive With Care" or service power steering message. Others get no warning at all. Failures happen while driving or when backing out of a parking space. Dealers usually trace it to the electric power steering motor or the steering gear and call the repair expensive. Reported mileages run from 26,473 to about 74,000, so even low-mileage cars are affected.
Airbags51 crash
The passenger seat airbag sensor malfunctions. The airbag warning light comes on with chimes and an OnStar alert, and it returns after being dismissed. Dealers diagnose the passenger seat airbag module and sensor, and owners near 62,000 miles were told the repair falls outside warranty. In one crash with a deer, the airbags did not deploy and the driver was injured. In another report, the driver's airbag went off overnight in a parked car after its warning light had been on.
Brakes44 crashes
All four reports describe a crash where the brakes did not stop the car. Drivers slide into the car ahead at freeway speed, at low speed, or pulling out of a lot. One car kept rolling in reverse and then forward even with heavy pedal pressure, and it ended up hitting a signpost. Several drivers say stops felt long or weak for months before the crash. One crash caused an injury.
Exterior lights31 crash
Water and condensation collect inside both headlight housings, sometimes pooling at the bottom, and the headlights get noticeably dimmer at night. One dealer proposed drilling drain holes in each housing instead of replacing them. One owner faces about $200 to replace both lights. The one dated report puts the problem at about 44,000 miles. A separate crash report describes a rear-end collision but does not tie it to a lighting fault.
Engine2No crashes
Power drops suddenly at highway speed and a Reduced Engine Power warning appears, which raises the risk of being rear-ended. Restarting the engine brings power back, but the check engine light stays on and the problem keeps coming back. The other report describes a strange odor in the cabin that a dealer traced to a leaking AC evaporator coil, the same failure many owners file under other categories. That coil was replaced at 39,000 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Impala owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
While driving from work the car did a quick jerk and the STABILITRAK, ABS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALL CAME ON ALL AT ONCE. As I pulled into my workplace the car lost power to the engine completely while displaying ACTION REQUIRED ON THE LCD SCREEN. The brake and steering wheel became stiff and it was hard to control the vehicle. It took 10 minutes for me to regain power and control over the vehicle that again after leaving work stopped on the highway.

Tire pressure sensor system receiver (part of keyless entry system) will not collect info from individual tire pressure sensors in tires. Failure of this safety system would not provide and advance warning of low tire pressure.

I was driving and parked the car at the store. After checking out I went to the car got ready to leave and started backing out and the car would not turn to the left at all. I took it to the shop and was told they do not see anything wrong with my car but a steering message is coming up.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Equinox, Impala, Cruze, Volt and Bolt EV vehicles, GMC Terrain vehicles, Buick Lacrosse and Regal vehicles, Cadillac XTS and XTS Professional vehicles and 2018 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The rear brake caliper pistons may have an insufficient coating causing gas pockets to form, potentially reducing rear brake performance.
Risk: A reduction of braking performance can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will bleed the vehicle's brake system, free of charge. The recall began October 11, 2018. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
