Which Equinox EV is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, FWD | 285–319 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 285–319 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Wipers and visibility55No crashes
Sunlight on the ridged, shiny black dashboard throws a reflection of its slatted pattern onto the inside of the windshield. Drivers say the glare is constant on bright days and hides pedestrians, crossing traffic, and the road ahead. Some notice it within the first few hundred miles. Several reports say it affects all trims, and many ask GM for a fix. One report adds that reflections in the side glass hid the mirrors and blind spot light, and the driver then merged into another car.
Sunlight on the dashboard reflects lines across the windshield and badly cuts forward visibility. One report also describes reduced travel on the driver's side wiper, which leaves part of the glass uncleared in the rain. That problem appeared at about 300 miles, and the dealer gave no help. Neither complaint reports a repair, so the glare remains the main concern.
Automatic emergency braking9No crashes
Automatic emergency braking slams on with nothing nearby. Owners report it in stop-and-go traffic, in parking lots, while backing up in the rain, and more often after a software update. The stops are hard enough to cause near-whiplash and nearly cause rear-end collisions, and dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. Super Cruise can also cut out without warning and brake in traffic, and the brakes sometimes stay applied until they overheat. In another case, a failed video processing unit took out all cameras and radar while the replacement part was on order.
Electrical7No crashes
High-voltage battery warnings appear early. One showed up at less than 5,000 miles, and another came with a loss of cabin heat and a wait for dealer service. On a new car with 215 miles, a brake system failure message limited speed to 62 mph on the interstate, and the car was hard to slow down. Other reports describe the dashboard going dark and rebooting on the freeway, screens getting too hot to touch, false emergency braking at 75 mph, and turn signals flashing the wrong way.
Brakes61 crash
Brakes engage on their own, most often while reversing, and sometimes at 70 mph on the interstate with no one around. Drivers describe hard, screeching stops that feel like backing into a wall. One crash is on file. The brake pedal did not respond while parking at an EV charger, and the car hit the barrier at a little over 3k miles. Owners also report trouble getting service, including dealers without an EV technician and long holds with Chevrolet.
Exterior lights5No crashes
The recessed headlamp wells fill with snow when driving in winter storms. The LED lamps do not run hot enough to melt it, so the light dims until the driver pulls over and clears it by hand. Other reports filed here describe both screens, the A/C, and the audio going blank for about 30 seconds at highway speed, auto lights not working properly, dashboard glare on the windshield, false emergency braking, and the left signal flashing after a right turn.
Backup camera3No crashes
The car brakes hard in reverse, warning of a pedestrian or obstacle that is not there. Sometimes it stops completely and will not back up again until the driver shifts to park and then back to reverse. The same sudden stops also happen while pulling forward into a parking spot. Occupants report sore necks, and one report describes a near rear-end collision in traffic. Some events come with no warning beeps or seat vibration at all.
Steering3No crashes
The turn signal stalk springs back too hard when it cancels after a right turn, and the left signal flashes for about three blinks. Other drivers may expect a left turn or lane change that is not coming. Owners say it happens repeatedly, and one notes that a replacement stalk did not always cure it. One report also describes forward collision warnings that are too sensitive when creeping up to stopped traffic, and blind spot alerts set off by oncoming cars.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Equinox EV owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
This vehicle has a dashboard. The dashboard is made out of material that is subjected to extremely bad solar glare there are times that when driving you can’t even see out of the front window without wearing polarized sunglasses and even then you still can’t see. I’ve never had a car do this. It is so bad that when rounding corners, you may not be able to see a pedestrian or bicycle on the side of the road because you cannot see through the glare.

I nearly drove through a red light because the glare from the dashboard was so bad. Dash has multiple vent lines in it and is in a very shiny black. Driving in sunlight knocks out nearly 50% of the visibility in the windshield. If I do not wear polarized sunglasses, it is very difficult to see. I have not had the problem confirmed. No one has inspected it. It is a design flaw that needs to be addressed because visibility is very badly impaired.

Since my vehicle has a software update, my vehicle has had multiple instances of the AEB engaging in instances where it previously wouldn't have. The worst case was when I was in a parking lot turning into a space and the AEB went off when there was no reason for it to. This has also gone off while driving when slowing down at a light when they're was another vehicle in front but I was slowing down as normal.

Vehicle engages the forward collision control system without an obstacle, locking the brakes and causing abrupt stops. This usually happens in heavy slow moving traffic conditions with sharp and short accelerations (merging and lane changing).
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
Have had no heat in the car for several days. Today while driving on the freeway, vehicle has warning come up of "High Voltage Warning" and "Service Vehicle Soon." Dealership cannot get car in for another week and no loaner vehicles to any customers.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
When operating the turn signal after finishing the turn when it cancels it will sometimes activate the lane change feature for the opposite direction causing the signals to give a false indication of intended action by the driver.

The vehicle will randomly brake on its own. I can be doing 70 on the interstate with no one around and it will disengage cruise and brake hard. It has nearly caused one accident when i had someone following me too closely.

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV vehicles. The pedestrian alert sound system may not produce a sufficient change in volume between the vehicle being stopped and moving at low speeds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.".
Risk: A vehicle that fails to make sufficient sound may result in pedestrians being unaware of an approaching vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: The vehicle's body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 17, 2025. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N252527170.
