Which Grand Caravan is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

3.6L 6-cylFlex fuelFWD20 mpg
  • The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Caravan that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical81No crashes

Sliding doors jam in the locked position and will not open by fob, button, or handle. A loud buzzing when locking often comes first. Other doors stick unlocked and won't lock, and some front door locks stop responding. Most failures show up between about 34,000 and 66,000 miles, and dealers quote up to $1,700 per door. Owners worry about getting children out in an emergency. Separate reports describe no-starts and a wiring harness near the power outlet that rubs the frame, overheats, and melts the carpet, a fire risk.

  • Body and structure44No crashes

Sliding door latches seize and leave the door locked shut, with fob, interior button, and handles all dead. Often one side fails and the other follows months later. Some doors fail the opposite way: they won't lock and can open while the van is moving. One power door kept closing on an arm. Mechanics blame worn latches or seized lock actuators. Repairs run from over $600 to more than $1,300 per door. Most failures fall between roughly 44,000 and 60,000 miles. A few reports cover a liftgate that won't open and a middle-row seat that won't fold.

  • Engine21No crashes

A cylinder 2 misfire is the dominant problem. It brings a check engine light, rough idle, shaking, and loss of power. New spark plugs and coils rarely fix it. Shops find low compression and point to the cylinder head or valves, with estimates from about $3,700 to over $5,000. Onset runs from about 46,000 to 75,000 miles, often just past the factory warranty. Several reports describe stalling or sudden loss of power while driving, including at 45 mph, sometimes with no warning light.

  • Transmission21No crashes

Transmissions fail between roughly 69,000 and 91,000 miles. The van loses acceleration on the highway, whines, revs high while barely moving, or refuses to shift. Owners describe delayed acceleration as an early sign. Leaks and a failed flex plate also come up. One report describes the van accelerating on its own in traffic. Several complaints here actually involve cylinder misfires and suspected head problems, and one cites a lifter failure that damaged the engine. Another describes a hood latch that let go at 45 mph.

  • Airbags121 crash

Deployment without a crash is the main pattern. Front and seat air bags fire while parking or at low speed, causing burns and bruises. Active head restraints in the front seats go off with no rear impact and need costly replacement because they can't be reset. Other reports describe a warning light that comes and goes, even after repeated air bag and wiring replacements. In one crash, the front air bags failed to deploy in a small overlap collision and the unbelted driver died.

  • Door latches and locks11No crashes

Sliding doors fail to unlock or unlatch and stay shut against the fob and both handles. A buzzing sound during operation often comes first. Once one side fails, the other side often follows. When shops diagnose the problem, they find a failed door lock actuator. Reported failures range from about 36,000 to 123,000 miles, with most between 49,700 and 78,000. Dealers often leave the van undiagnosed or unrepaired, and the manufacturer rarely offers help.

  • Seats101 crash

Front head restraints burst open without any impact, while driving, parked, or sitting overnight. They strike occupants in the head, causing neck pain and dizziness, and usually can't be reset. Several cases appear around 60,000 miles. In a high-speed rear-end crash, a third-row seat broke loose from its floor hooks and swung with the passenger in it. Six people were injured. Another passenger was hurt when a seatback slammed forward during adjustment. This category records eight injuries.

  • Brakes62 crashes

The brake pedal goes soft, sinks toward the floor, or stops the van poorly. Some drivers say it kept rolling despite hard braking. Bleeding the brakes helps for a while, then the spongy pedal returns. One shop found a gas bubble in a brake line. Two reports involve crashes in which the driver says the brakes didn't stop the van. Others describe longer stopping distances that began soon after purchase.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Grand Caravan owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Sliding side door on drivers side is locked and unable to get in or out of door. Carry 4 grand children in back and they could not be removed from side door in an emergency. Cannot unlock by key fob or manually. Vehicle has 46000 miles on it

Filed with NHTSA, April 2022

Electrical
The rear driverside sliding door was stuck in the lock position for several months. It was inconvenient that the actuator stopped working on the door. After months of it being stuck it suddenly works, but everytime the door s lock the rear driverside sliding doors locking system makes a buzzer sound while locking. If this fails again and we need to leave the car quickly in an emergency not having both doors working properly could be very dangerous.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Body and structure
The left side sliding door will not open at all. Tried to unlock manually will not open have to use other side for kids to get out of van. I did some online research saying the the lock actuator on sliding door seized. To me this is major safety hazard. If anything should be able to open manually but cannot even with key fob will not open. Theo locking switch does not move at all stuck in middle.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2021

Body and structure
Right sliding door does not lock when lock button is pushed and will swing open during driving and can be opened when parked while the lock system is still in place. Also the door when manually closed has trapped an arm and does not stop closing. Also have bubbles on front hood from unknown cause. Door problem started several weeks ago and was looked at then and also today at the dealer.

Engine
Van is driven a few thousand miles per year since we purchased. Routine maintenance up kept and has just over 100K miles. Replaced coils, plugs as routine for maintenance but having a Cylinder 2 misfire, then it became #6 and now is "multiple random misfire" codes. vehicle shutters dangerously when driving and engine light comes on intermittently. EVERY person I know with this pentastar v6 has had identical problems!

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Engine
Cylinder 2 misfire on V-6 engine. van has 66,000 miles. run good. appears there are no air or fuel leaks. Dodge dealer in our town went out of business. No dealer for 40 miles. Car belonged to my parents for 3 years prior and they never had any problems. Van has been serviced regularly. shouldn't there be a recall on this. google is loaded with the same complaint and it says probably a bad head.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Transmission
We have a 2018 dodge caravan with 69,000 miles on it - the check engine light showed a misfire on cylinder 5, after taking it to multiple mechanics they all have told us its an issue with the head gasket or possibly needs a new engine. This should not be happening with such a new vehicle with so few miles on it. after doing some research I have learned this is a common problem with this year, make and model.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2021

Transmission
The van started to make a loud whining sound while going down the highway around 60 miles an hour. When we slowed down and turned onto a smaller road and tried to accelerate the rpm’s went to around 5,000 and it was barely moving. Had to stop for a long time and was able to drive it the last couple of miles home very slowly. Several children in the car were at risk if someone had hit us at hwy speed
