Reported on other iX years with the same design

These years share the 2023's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Which iX is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 BMW iX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD324 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 324 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 BMW iX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Airbags101 crash

A driver airbag that may not deploy dominates these reports, and most describe a recall repair stalled by a parts shortage. Dealers and BMW customer service tell owners it will be weeks to months before replacement airbags arrive. Some have waited 3+ months. People leasing the car say they cannot return it, buy it out, or sell it while the repair is still open. One report describes an airbag fault message at startup around 6,000 miles. In one crash at about 2,000 miles, the airbags did not deploy.

  • Electrical51 crash

The car suddenly loses motive power while driving. Reports describe shutdowns on the freeway and at about 35 mph. One driver lost power steering and power brakes, and another saw a "Malfunction, Pull Over" message. A dealer blamed one failure at 30 miles on an undetermined high-voltage battery fault. Other complaints describe an Emergency Call System warning plus a chemical burning smell, which a dealer linked to an overheating control module. Another describes a crash from unintended movement, after which BMW said it found no defect.

  • Acceleration and cruise control33 crashes

Unintended acceleration while parking appears in all 3 complaints, and every one ended in a crash. Injuries reported include whiplash and neck pain. Drivers say the car surges forward at low speed, about 5 mph in one case. It happens right after shifting into drive or while easing into a space, and the car hits a building or other vehicles. One incident happened in B mode. None of the reports names a confirmed cause, and one owner expects BMW to blame driver error.

  • Transmission21 crash

The car either drops into neutral with a drivetrain fault message or moves when it should stay put. In one report, the car will not go back into drive even after a restart. In the other, a car the driver believed was in park accelerates over a curb and sidewalk into a storefront while passengers are getting out. The airbags do not deploy and the hazard lights do not come on. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both describe the driver losing control of the car's movement.

  • Steering2No crashes

A "steering effort has changed" warning appears in one report. That owner says many other iX drivers have seen the same warning and had the steering rack replaced by the dealer. A second report describes a full shutdown in the middle of the road that leaves the driver unable to accelerate, brake, or steer to the side. The dealer blamed the Combined Charging Unit, and the car stayed at the dealer for a long time. Only 2 complaints are on file.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints iX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Airbags
The dealer says it will be many weeks to months until they have replacement airbags available. I had a phone call with BMW USA customer service and they say the same thing. It is not a timely repair. I want to return car from lease but BMW refuses to accept it. I also cannot buy car off lease to sell to someone else. I hope NHTSA will require BMW to take back this unsafe car because they cannot make timely repair. Thank you.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Airbags
Air bag may not deploy on drivers side causing potential death to a driver that is already a chronic neck pain, poising a worse threat to the driver. I bought a car that I thought was safe and had air bags. The letter says remedy is unavailable and they can't tell me when it will be. The car has been in the shop with multiple problems and shut downs as well.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Transmission
Car suddenly went into neutral and a drivetrain fault error message popped up. Unable to set to drive to continue driving. Powered off car and back on and same error message.

How the 2023 compares with other iX years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2023 has the most owner complaints of the 3 iX years we cover, close to the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2023 fits in the iX's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the second model year of the iX's first generation (2022 on).

BMW updated the iX for 2026, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2026 (not on a 2023)

  • Improved range
  • Power enhancements
  • Efficiency improvements
  • Minor styling adjustments
